Tips on Decorating
with Persian Area Rugs
Decorating with Persian area
rugs is one of the easiest ways
to revitalize, update, improve
and beautify any room in your
home. Persian area rugs can turn a
drab room into one full of
color. Or you can use Persian
rugs to create a focal point or
define an area of interest.
Persian rugs can add warmth to
otherwise cold tiles, stone or
concrete floors. Persian rugs
will protect hardwood floor or
wall-to-wall carpeting. The
right Persian rug can tie
together all of a room’s décor
elements.

Persian
rugs are extremely versatile
and can serve numerous purposes
in your home. Whether you are
decorating your living room,
family room, bedroom, kitchen,
hallway or patio, there’s a
Persian rug that is right for
you. Unlike wall-to-wall
carpet, which is normally best
kept rather neutral, Persian
rugs can bring colorful
patterns and designs into your
room without overwhelming it.
Plus, unlike carpeting, Persian
rugs can be changed with the
seasons – or your mood – and
are yours to keep should you
move.
If you are lucky enough to have
wooden floors in your home,
Persian rugs are the perfect
compliment. With a little care
your wooden floors will last
forever. They don’t collect
allergens the way carpet does,
are easy to clean and provide a
perfect background for a
beautiful Persian rug. But even
if you have wall-to-wall
carpeting you can still use
Persian rugs. Simply place them
in high-traffic areas to
protect the carpet or use
Persian rugs to tie a seating
area together. You can even put
Persian rugs on the walls to
create an interesting display!
The
Importance of Using a Quality
Rug Pad
Experts in the home décor
industry all agree that every
Persian area rug requires a
good-quality rug pad underneath
it. Not only does this promote
safety in your home by
preventing the rug from
slipping, it also increases the
life of your Persian rug and
makes it much easier to
regularly vacuum. Never use
tape or adhesive to anchor a
Persian rug to your floor or
carpeting. This can easily
damage both the floor and rug.
The Persian Dream rug pads we
sell at Rug Specials - RugDepot
come with a 10-year warranty.
They are guaranteed not to mar,
stain or discolor the floor and
to hold your Persian rug
securely in place. They come in
a variety of sizes and are
reversible for use on either
bare floors or carpeting. Also,
most Persian rugs manufacturers
require that their product be
placed on top of a quality rug
pad in order to validate their
warranty against defects in
workmanship.

Useful
Information About Persian Rugs
Persia was the ancient name of
modern-day Iran. Persian rugs
have received international
acknowledgment for their
artistic splendor and glorious
design. Artisans began making
Persian rugs more than
twenty-five hundred years ago.
Records from the seventy
century show that early
patterns were usually
symmetrical with geometric and
floral motifs, and they were
made primarily of wool and
silk. The beauty of the Persian
garden was reflected in their
designs. Persian rugs were
thought to be one of the
relished possessions of
royalty. I
During the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries the
quality of the raw materials
used to create Persian rugs and
the designs created took
Persian rug-making to an
astonishing new level. A weaver
was an honored professional. He
was given great privileges.
Historians tell that sheep were
specially bred to grow the
finest possible wool for
weaving. Vegetable plantations
were tended with scientific
precision to provide permanent
dyes of just the right shade. A
new era marked the perfection
of the Persian rug and to this
day, the best-known cultural
export of Iran are Persian
rugs. It is estimated that
today Iran produces
approximately three-quarters of
all the handmade rugs in the
world.
Because the wool, cotton and
silk used in marking the
Persian rugs are perishable,
very few of the earliest rugs
are now in existence. The
earliest known Persian rug was
discovered by Russian Professor
Rudenko in 1949 during
excavations of burial mounds in
the Altai Mountains in Siberia.
The rug had been preserved
purely by chance. Soon after it
had been placed in the burial
mound, grave robbers raided the
tomb. They ignored the rug.
Through the opening they left,
water poured into the mound and
froze, thus protecting the rug
from decay. Called the Pazyryk
rug, it has a woolen pile
knotted with Chiordes knots.
Its central field is a deep red
color and it has two wide
borders, one depicting deer and
the other Persian horseman. It
dates from the fifth century
B.C. and is now kept in the
Hermitage Museum of Leningrad.
The different geographic
regions and provinces in which
Persian rugs are made influence
the design and weaving process.
For example, Persian rugs from
Kerman Province are thought of
as some of the most colorful
and soft. The region is
renowned for its very large
rugs. They often contain shades
of green and are usually made
from locally-grown cotton. Some
other areas display more bold
designs and others use goat's
wool rather than sheep’s wool.
Tabriz is known for variety,
while Na'in for the number of
knots used to create the
Persian rug. Ghom has the most
traditional designs and Kashan
is known for strength and
durability of Persian rugs it
produces. Khorasan rugs are
influenced by the nomadic Turks
and Arabs. From Kordestan come
the most basic Persian rugs
with respect to design and
colors.
Shopping for a Persian rug can
be like taking a journey
through history. Not only is
your rug purchase a fine
investment, but in some
cultures it is a form of
currency! Certainly it will be
a keepsake to hand down from
generation to generation. The
element of luxury with which
Persian rugs are associated
today provides a marked
contrast with its humble
beginning among the nomadic
tribes that wandered the great
expanses of Persia.
